Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. But her parents would not permit her to perform until she turned an adult because of the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began performing as a means to connect with new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were in demand. Perry was a part of Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was staged at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was a part of nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. The character she played was the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
